Dune Road is a fisherman's address whether you meant it to be or not. Stay here and you're on a barrier island with the open Atlantic on one side and Moriches Bay on the other — two completely different fisheries separated by a few hundred feet of sand and a two-lane road.
That geography means you can fish three ways in a single stay: cast into the surf from the beach behind the house, work the calm back bay with light tackle, or book a charter out of a nearby marina and let a captain do the finding. Here's how each one works, and what tends to be running when.
Surfcasting from the beach out back
Both of our homes have a private boardwalk over the dunes, which means the surf is a two-minute walk with a rod over your shoulder. Dawn and dusk are the classic windows — coffee in one hand, first light on the water, and often a stretch of beach entirely to yourself.
The Atlantic surf here is a genuine striped bass fishery in the cooler shoulders of the season, with bluefish crashing bait through the warm months. You don't need a boat, a guide, or much more than a surf rod and a few plugs or bait rigs to be in the game.
The back bay: Moriches Bay
Cross the road and everything changes. Moriches Bay is shallow, sheltered, and calm — the kind of water where a light spinning rod and a bucket of bait can keep kids busy for an afternoon. It's also serious fluke water in the warm months, when drifting the channels and flats for summer flounder is a Long Island ritual.
The bay suits small boats, kayaks, and even dock-and-shoreline fishing, and because the barrier island blocks the ocean swell, a breezy day that blows out the surf often leaves the bay perfectly fishable.
Charter boats from nearby marinas
For the biggest fish and the least guesswork, book a charter. Captains run trips from marinas minutes from the homes, and they bring everything that matters: the boat, the gear, the bait, and the local knowledge of where the fish were yesterday. Trips range from a few hours on the bay to full days on the ocean.
A charter is the great equalizer for a mixed group — seasoned anglers get their shot at a big striper while first-timers and kids get rods rigged for them and plenty of action. If your crew wants to roam farther, Montauk's famous fishing grounds make a memorable full-day excursion east.
What runs when, in broad strokes
Seasons shift year to year, but the general shape of the calendar is reliable:
- Spring — striped bass migrate through, and the surf and bay both wake up
- Summer — fluke in the bay, bluefish in the surf, and the easiest all-around fishing for families
- Fall — the famous fall run, when bait pours along the beaches and striper fishing peaks
- Off-season — the homes are winterized for all seasons, so a quiet shoulder-season fishing weekend is entirely realistic
Licenses, and letting us set it up
New York requires saltwater anglers to enroll in the state's saltwater fishing registry, so check the current requirements before you cast. On charter and party boats, the captain's coverage generally takes care of passengers — one more reason a charter is the low-friction option.
We can arrange a fishing charter as an add-on with your stay. Mention it with your booking inquiry — a rough idea of your group size and whether you want a bay trip or an ocean day is all we need to start — or call +1 201-888-1170 and we'll line it up around your dates.
Common questions
Can we fish right at the house?
Yes. Both homes have a private boardwalk to the ocean beach, so you can surfcast steps from your door — dawn and dusk are the prime windows. Moriches Bay, just across Dune Road, offers calm light-tackle fishing.
Do we need fishing licenses?
New York requires saltwater anglers to enroll in the state's free saltwater registry — check the current rules before your trip. On charter boats, the captain's coverage generally takes care of the passengers aboard.
When is the best fishing near Westhampton Beach?
