Getting to Westhampton Beach from NYC

Of all the Hamptons villages, Westhampton Beach is the closest to New York City — roughly 90 minutes door-to-door when traffic cooperates. That proximity is the whole point: you can leave Manhattan after lunch and have your feet in the sand before sunset.

There are four sensible ways to make the trip. Here's how each one actually works, and how to decide between them.

By car (the most flexible option)

Driving is the easiest choice for families and groups, especially with luggage, beach gear, coolers, and a dog along for the ride. From Manhattan you'll take the Long Island Expressway (I-495) east, then connect to Sunrise Highway (NY-27) and follow signs toward Westhampton Beach and Dune Road.

Plan for about 90 minutes outside of peak times. The classic Hamptons traffic crunch is Friday afternoon heading east and Sunday afternoon heading back west — leaving early in the morning or after the evening rush makes a real difference. Both of our homes have ample private parking, so once you arrive the car can stay put for the weekend.

By train (the LIRR)

The Long Island Rail Road runs from Penn Station and Grand Central out to the Montauk Branch, with a stop in Westhampton. It's a relaxing, traffic-free ride if you'd rather not drive — though you'll want a car or rideshare for the last few minutes to Dune Road and for getting around once you're here.

By bus (the Hampton Jitney)

The Hampton Jitney is a Hamptons institution — a comfortable coach with reserved seats, Wi-Fi, and refreshments that picks up along the East Side of Manhattan and drops in Westhampton Beach. It's a popular, low-stress option for couples and solo travelers who don't need a car for the whole trip.

By air (for the splurge)

Seaplane and helicopter services run from Manhattan to the East End in the warm months and can turn the trip into a 40-minute scenic hop. It's the priciest option by far, but for a milestone celebration it's a memorable way to arrive.

Common questions

How long does it take to get to Westhampton Beach from Manhattan?

Roughly 90 minutes by car outside of peak traffic. Friday evenings eastbound and Sunday afternoons westbound are the busiest windows — travel early or late to avoid them.

Do I need a car once I'm in Westhampton Beach?

It helps. The village is about five minutes away and there's plenty to explore nearby, so most guests find a car convenient even if they arrive by train or jitney. Both homes have private parking.
